Probate and Family Court

Located off Dedham Street on Shawmut Road, the Norfolk division of the Probate and Family Court is located at 35 Shawmut Road, Canton.

It has jurisdiction over divorce and paternity cases, matters of child support and alimony, property division, custody and parenting plans, along with abuse prevention.

Norfolk Probate & Family Court serves families in Avon, Bellingham, Braintree, some parts of Brookline, Canton, Cohasset, Dedham, Dover, Foxborough, Franklin, Holbrook, Medfield, Medway, Millis, Milton, Needham, Norfolk, Norwood, Plainville, Quincy, Randolph, Sharon, Stoughton, Walpole, Wellesley, Westwood, Weymouth and Wrentham.

The sitting Probate and Family Court justices in Norfolk County include:

  • Hon. Susan L. Jacobs, Associate Justice (Courtroom 5)
  • Hon. James V. Menno, Associate Justice (Courtroom 3)

  • Hon. Jennifer M. Ulwick, Associate Justice (Courtroom 2)

Norfolk runs a flexible schedule, however each Judge has his or her own day for hearing motions. Judge Casey hears motions on Monday, Judge Ulwick on Tuesdays, Judge Jacobs on Wednesday and Judge Menno on Thursdays.

Prior to becoming the Chief Justice of the entire Massachusetts Probate & Family Court, Angela M. Ordoñez was the First Justice of the Norfolk County Probate and Family Court. Some claim Norfolk County is a leading court within the system, with unique programs such as:

The Bar Association of Norfolk County has implemented a Conciliation Program in accordance with Supreme Judicial Court Rule 1:18 (Uniform Rules on Dispute Resolution), which provides court-connected dispute resolution services to the court.

Norfolk County’s Family Court in Canton was one of the first to roll-out Limited Assistance Representation. The LAR program permits attorneys to assist clients on a limited basis without fully representing the client in all aspects of litigation. The client and attorney agree on the specific, discrete tasks to be performed by each. Depending on the nature of the attorney’s involvement, the attorney may or may not enter an appearance with the court.
